How to Change Hair Color or Hairstyle in a Video with AI (Real Test)

You can change the hair in a video you already have in three ways: a hair color filter in a phone editor recolors the hair you filmed, masking in a pro editor does the same by hand, and an AI video-to-video edit re-renders the person with the color and cut you describe. Only the third can give someone a new hairstyle. We tested it on October 17, 2026, with Riffkit's Swap on our own 8-second clip. Three of the four shots came back with the short platinum-blonde bob and fringe we asked for, with the same face, outfits, room and gestures; the first shot kept her dark hair, pulled back into a sleek bun. It cost 1,080 credits on Seedance 2.0 at 720p and took about 6 and a half minutes. Below are the three ways side by side, our exact brief, what changed in each shot and how to do it on your own clip.

Three ways to change the hair in a video

Way What it changes Starts from Good for
Hair color filters and templates in phone editors (CapCut, YouCam Video) The color of the hair you filmed Your clip A quick recolor when the cut stays the same
Masking in a pro editor (After Effects, DaVinci Resolve) The color, isolated and tracked by hand Your clip Full control over the shade, if you have the time
AI video-to-video editing (Runway Aleph 2.0, Riffkit Swap) The color and the cut, from a written description Your clip A new length, fringe or style across every shot

Filters recolor; they don't restyle. CapCut's hair color templates change hair color in photos and videos, per its template page, and YouCam Video applies hair color filters to a clip on your phone. Both keep the cut you filmed. Masking in After Effects or DaVinci Resolve gives you more control over the shade, but you isolate the hair and fix the mask wherever it slips, and a different length or fringe would mean drawing hair that isn't there.

AI video-to-video editors redraw the person. Runway's Aleph 2.0 page lists "a hairstyle" among the things it can change on its own and says it edits clips up to 30 seconds at 1080p. Kling's VIDEO O1 takes one 3- to 10-second video plus a description, per its user guide. Riffkit's Swap keeps the shots, cuts and sound of your clip and changes what you name, up to 45 seconds.

Most "AI hairstyle changer video" pages start from a photo. You upload one portrait and get a newly generated clip, not your own footage with new hair. That's useful for a try-on, but the shots, the room and what the person says all come from the generator.

The test: a new hairstyle in our own clip

The source is our own 8-second vertical clip, made with AI and saved as a template in our Riffkit account: one woman in a living room, four shots, four outfits, Spanish voice-over and on-screen captions. Her hair is long, dark and worn down in every shot. We used our own clip because Swap keeps the source's sound and everything you don't change, and someone else's video isn't ours to edit.

Settings: Swap, Seedance 2.0, 720p, no character, so the original person stays. What to change, exactly as we wrote it:

In every shot, change her long dark hair to a short platinum-blonde bob with a blunt fringe that ends at her jaw. Keep her face, skin and expressions, all four outfits, the room, every shot, cut, camera move and gesture, and the on-screen captions exactly as they are.

What changed in each shot

Shot Original Result
1 Long dark hair, brown fitted top, jeans, gold chain Dark hair pulled back into a sleek bun, not the bob; same top, jeans and chain
2 Long dark hair, cream sweatshirt with a red apple Platinum-blonde bob with a blunt fringe; same sweatshirt and jeans
3 Long dark hair, white tank top, gold chain The same bob; same tank top, jeans, chain and bracelet
4 Long dark hair, grey graphic sweatshirt The same bob; same sweatshirt and jeans

Three shots got the new hair, and everything around it held. Her face is the same woman's in all four shots, and the bob looks the same from shot 2 to shot 4, down to its slightly darker roots, which we didn't ask for. The room, the light, her gestures, the main caption in each shot and the checkmark stickers match the original. Two of the three cuts land on the same frame as the original's and the third lands one frame earlier, and the Spanish voice-over came back with the video.

What drifted: shot 1 kept her hair dark and pulled it back into a sleek bun instead of the bob, and the small "acuérdate…" line above the main caption is missing in the three shots with the new hair; it's still there in shot 1. We don't know yet what made the first shot miss, so check every shot before you post. For a related test on clothes, Change Outfit in Video with AI has three outfits changed in one Swap and what drifted there.

What it cost. Riffkit billed 1,080 credits: 9 billed seconds at 120 credits a second, the Swap rate of Seedance 2.0 at 720p (the 8-second clip rounds up). The video was finished about 6 and a half minutes after we submitted it.

How to change the hair in a video with Swap

  1. Open Swap. It's the first card on the Make videos page.
  2. Add the clip. Upload a file up to 100 MB, paste a TikTok link or pick a template. Swap keeps the full length, up to 45 seconds, so trim a longer clip first.
  3. Describe the new hair under "What to change". Give the color, the length and the shape, and say where it ends: "a short platinum-blonde bob with a blunt fringe that ends at her jaw" leaves little to guess. If only some shots should change, name them.
  4. End with what should stay. Her face, outfits, the room, shots, cuts, gestures and captions held in our test because we listed them. Write What Changes, Not a Prompt has more on writing the brief.
  5. Pick an engine. We used Seedance 2.0 at 720p. Free accounts can Swap on Seedance 2.0 Fast 480p or Seedance 2.0 480p.
  6. Check the price and submit. The page shows the billed seconds and the credit total before you tap Riff it →.
  7. Watch every shot before you post. In our test, one of four shots kept the old hair color.

If you sell wigs or hair color, the same steps let one model wear several styles from a single shoot: a video you've already run, re-rendered once per shade or cut, with the same shots and voice-over each time.

What it costs, and how to start free

Swap bills per second of finished video, at its own rates:

Engine Swap credits per second
Seedance 2.0 Fast 50 at 480p, 100 at 720p
Seedance 2.0 60 at 480p, 120 at 720p, 300 at 1080p
Seedance 2.5 90 at 480p, 180 at 720p
MiniMax H3 80 at 768P, 160 at 2K

Each render bills whole seconds, rounded up. The plan shows the price before anything is submitted, and failed renders aren't charged. Plans start at $15 a month for 3,000 credits.

New accounts start with free credits, no card needed, and can Swap on Seedance 2.0 Fast 480p or Seedance 2.0 480p. A short clip comes back whole; most longer ones start with a free first section, and a plan finishes the rest. Videos made on the free credits carry a small Riffkit watermark. We ran this test on Seedance 2.0 at 720p, which comes with a plan.

Rights: use footage you own

This clip is ours; we made it with AI. Use your own footage or footage you have the rights to. The people and the sound in someone else's video still belong to them, new hair or not.

Try it on your own clip

Open Swap, add a clip of your own up to 45 seconds, describe the new hair and what should stay, and submit. To change the clothes instead, see Change Outfit in Video with AI; to change the place, how to change the background of a video; to change the whole person, Best AI to Replace a Character in a Video.

FAQ

How do I change hair color in a video with AI?

Use a tool that edits your own footage rather than one that turns a photo into a new clip. Phone editors such as CapCut and YouCam Video have hair color templates and filters that recolor the hair you already filmed. AI video-to-video editors such as Runway Aleph 2.0 and Riffkit's Swap re-render the clip from a written description, so they can change the color and the cut. In Riffkit's test, Swap turned long dark hair into a short platinum-blonde bob in three of four shots of an 8-second clip, for 1,080 credits on Seedance 2.0 at 720p.

Can AI change the hairstyle in a video, not just the color?

Yes, with a video-to-video editor that re-renders the person. Color filters and manual masking only recolor the hair you filmed; a new length or fringe means drawing new hair, which they don't do. Runway's Aleph 2.0 page names a hairstyle as one of the things it changes, and Riffkit's Swap changes whatever you name under What to change. In our test, three of four shots came back with the requested bob and fringe; the first shot kept dark hair, pulled back into a sleek bun.

Can I change hair color in a video for free?

Phone editors such as CapCut offer free hair color templates. Riffkit is free to start with no card: a new account can Swap on Seedance 2.0 Fast or Seedance 2.0 at 480p, a short clip comes back whole, and most longer ones start with a free first section that a plan finishes. Videos made on the free credits carry a small Riffkit watermark.

Will the person keep the same face after a hair change?

In our test, yes. Swap keeps the person unless you pick a character, and the woman's face stayed the same in all four shots, along with her four outfits, the room, her gestures and the main captions. End your description with what should stay, as we did, and check every shot before you post.

How much does it cost to change the hair in a video with AI?

Riffkit bills Swap per second of finished video. Our 8-second clip on Seedance 2.0 at 720p billed 9 seconds at 120 credits a second, 1,080 credits, and came back about 6 and a half minutes after we submitted it. Seedance 2.0 Fast at 480p costs 50 credits a second. Plans start at $15 a month for 3,000 credits.

How long can the video be?

Riffkit's Swap takes a clip up to 45 seconds and 100 MB, uploaded, pasted as a TikTok link or picked from a template. Runway's Aleph 2.0 page says it edits clips up to 30 seconds at 1080p, and Kling's guide for VIDEO O1 lists one input video of 3 to 10 seconds, up to 200 MB.
